Treble-One (Fighter) Squadron has a rich history with much of it focussed on defending UK airspace and its interests. Today, we continue in this role; with Tornado F3s and crews on high readiness to scramble and intercept unidentified aircraft approaching UK airspace. In parallel, there is the requirement for training flying to ensure we can fly our missions effectively and safely. There are currently 14 crews and 141 engineers dedicated to delivering the Quick Reaction Alert operational task which is RAF Leuchars’ first priority.
As we approach the drawdown of the Tornado F3 fleet, CXI (Fighter) Squadron will disband in March 2011, although hopefully only temporarily. With such a long and distinguished history and the Squadron’s rich association with RAF Leuchars, it is hoped that it will soon be re-born as a Typhoon squadron, defending the nations’ skies well into the twenty-first century.
